Youth Symphony Orchestra members may audition to perform a concerto of their choice for the annual Youth Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. One soloist may be chosen to be accompanied by the QCSO in a concerto movement or other short solo work for their instrument at the QCSO/QCSYE Side-by-Side Concert in April and another soloist may be chosen to be similarly accompanied by the YSO at the YSO Finale Concert in May. The soloists are chosen by a competition audition committee consisting of professional musicians. Each student competitor must audition with the repertoire they would perform with the orchestra if chosen.
Eligibility + Audition Requirements
Any YSO musician is eligible to participate in the Concerto Competition if they meet all of the following criteria:
- They were a member of the YSO during the fall semester and performed with the orchestra in the Fall Concert.
- They sustain YSO membership during the spring semester.
- Their audition repertoire is selected from a pre-approved list (at the end of this page) or is submitted for approval at least two weeks before the Concerto Competition Audition Application Due Date. Please email csammons@qcso.org to submit any work not listed on the pre-approved list.
- Previous prize winners may not audition for the Concerto Competition the season following their concerto performance with either the QCSO or YSO.
- The online Concerto Competition Audition Application must be submitted by Tuesday, October 1.
- Players are permitted to audition either on their YSO instrument or piano.
- Players must audition with a single movement of a concerto or solo work that has orchestral accompaniment.
- Audition repertoire selections must be between five and fifteen minutes in length, including the accompaniment’s introduction, interludes, and codas. If the intended single movement/work is less than five minutes, the student competitor may add another movement from the same work—or a second short piece—which when combined with the first, is fewer than fifteen minutes in length.
- The orchestral tutti may be shortened or cut all together for the audition. Any cuts made to the concerto must be approved by the QCSYE Music Director, Hisham Bravo Groover, by the application due date (hbgroover@qcso.org).
- Piano accompaniment is required for the audition. Competitors will be provided with an accompanist free of charge.
- All applicants are required to pay a non-refundable $75.00 application fee. If you received a financial award toward tuition, you will also receive an award toward the application fee.
- Applicants must be available for both the Winter Concert Dress Rehearsal and QCSO/YSO Side-by-Side Rehearsals (please see YSO Handbook for season calendar).
Adjudication
- The adjudication committee will consist of no less than 5 members.
- The adjudication committee will be made up of a combination of any of the following: QCSO musicians, collegiate professors, and musicians deemed qualified by QCSO staff.
- The adjudication committee may determine not to award either or both prizes at its discretion.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Tuesday, October 1, 2024
AUDITION DATE: Sunday, December 8, 2024, 5:00 PM at Location TBA (audition is open to the public)
Audition date and time conflicts with Youth Symphony Orchestra rehearsal. All auditioning members will be excused from rehearsal to attend this audition.
