Classical “rock stars” to perform on WVIK/QCSO Signature Series

"Their rock star well deserved. Their classically honed technique mixed with grit and all out passionate attack transfixes the audience..." That is how The Sarasota Herald Tribune described the featured artist on the second WVIK/QCSO Signature Series concert: Sybarite5. From Mozart to Radiohead, Sybarite5's eclectic repertoire and dynamic performance style is turning heads throughout the music world. Sybarite5, a Quad City Arts Visiting Artist, is comprised of Sami Merdinian and Sarah Whitney, violins; Angela Pickett, viola; Laura Metcalf, cello; and Louis Levitt, bass. This concert is on Sunday, November 10, at 3:00 p.m. in Wallenberg Hall at Augustana College. This performance is sponsored by The Planning Center in Moline.

From the moment their bows hit the strings, this quintet of talented, diverse musicians will take you on an exciting ride that engages the senses and redefines the rules. "[Sybarite5] excelled at the exquisite...[playing] with relish, a sense of comfort, and a frisson of missionary zeal" (The Washington Post). Their five-track EP disc, Disturb the Silence, features music by Radiohead and Piazzolla–plus two original works written for the quintet–and made its debut at number 11 on Billboard's Classical Crossover chart. Sybarite5 is also being considered for a GRAMMY nomination in the areas of Album of the Year, Best Alternative Music Album, Best Recording Package, and Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.

Sybarite5 will be touring Quad City schools during the week as participants in the Quad City Arts Visiting Artist series. During their week-long residency, Sybarite5 will visit 15 schools and other outreach sites.

The Signature Series is presented by WVIK 90.3 FM in collaboration with the Quad City Symphony Orchestra and Augustana College. Performed in Augustana’s Wallenberg Hall and rebroadcast on WVIK, this versatile and intimate five-concert series features select members of the QCSO and visiting artists from across the nation. Under the artistic direction of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra’s Concertmaster Naha Greenholtz, the Signature Series is a testament to the vitality of the classical music community in the Quad Cities. The performance by Sybarite5 will be rebroadcast on WVIK-Augustana Public Radio 90.3 FM on Sunday, November 17, at 2:00 p.m.
